25 Years In — Why I Am Writing This

25 Years In — Why I Am Writing This

On why this series exists and who it is for

I have spent 25 years inside some of the most complex institutional environments on the planet. Tribunals. Post-conflict systems. Governance reform across regions where the stakes were never abstract: people's lives, institutions and the possibility of justice.

That work shaped me in ways I am still understanding. It also cost things I was never warned about. And gave me things no framework ever captured.

Not the career highlights. Not the strategic plans or the court improvement frameworks. The real thing. What it does to you to carry that kind of work for that long. What you learn about power and culture and leadership that rarely gets put in a framework. What you wish someone had said to you years ago when you were running on empty and calling it dedication.

And what it feels like on the days, because there were days, when something worked. When the room shifted. When you watched someone step into their authority for the first time and you knew you had something to do with that.

This series is about all of it.

Some of what I write will be uncomfortable. Not because I am trying to provoke. Because the truth of this work rarely gets said out loud.

This series is for three people.

The one still inside - grinding, delivering, wondering privately if this is sustainable and not saying it out loud because everyone around them seems fine.

The one transitioning out - trying to make sense of what those years actually meant and who they are now that the role no longer defines them.

And the one in between - not quite in, not quite out, sitting with questions they cannot yet fully name.

If any of that is you, you are not the only one.

I am saying it out loud.
