Twenty-five years inside the institutions the world builds to deliver justice.

Krystal K. Thompson is an international lawyer and leadership practitioner with more than twenty-five years of frontline experience across institutional systems in Asia, Africa, Europe, Central America and the Middle East.

Her career has been spent within some of the most demanding institutions in the world: four international war crimes tribunals, where she held senior court management posts, including Chief of Court Management at the Special Court for Sierra Leone, and served as the UN Focal Point for Women at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal. She has advised Attorneys General and Chief Justices in Liberia, South Africa, Lebanon, and Belize; served as Regional Justice Advisor to an ASEAN-wide anti-trafficking programme across seven countries, and authored The Gambia’s government-endorsed five-year Rule of Law Roadmap.

Her recent work includes GBV/SEAH standard operating procedures for a geothermal operation in Indonesia supported by the Asian Development Bank, advising UNODC on gendered dynamics in human trafficking, and leading the design of the current phase of UNDP’s global rule of law programme.

She currently advises on rule of law, governance, and business and human rights, including human rights due diligence and GBV/SEAH safeguards in development bank-financed operations.

Her work sits at the intersection of institutional expertise and human reality: what it costs professionals to carry high-responsibility work over time, and what sustains them. She is developing Leading in Complex Systems, a program for senior professionals in high-responsibility environments, to be piloted in 2026.

Her series 25 Years In speaks honestly about what leading in complex systems actually looks like, and her paper on the practitioner as public humanist has been accepted for the University of Lucerne’s Law and the Humanities World Conference (September 2026).
