Krystal K. Thompson is an international lawyer by training and a leadership practitioner with more than 25 years of frontline experience working across cultures and institutional systems in Asia, Africa, Central America and the Middle East.

Her career has taken her into some of the most complex institutional environments in the world — international criminal tribunals, including the ICTY, ICTR, SCSL, and ECCC, and governance reform programs across multiple regions. That experience shapes everything she builds.

Her work sits at the intersection of institutional expertise and human reality—the gap between what systems are designed to do and what people inside them actually experience. She is particularly focused on what it costs professionals to carry high-responsibility work over time and what sustains them through it.

She is the founder of Leading in Complex Systems, a structured initiative within the GED platform that supports experienced professionals and decision-makers working in high-responsibility institutional environments.

Her thought leadership series 25 Years In draws on 25 years of frontline institutional experience to speak honestly about what leading in complex systems actually looks like — the parts that shaped her, the parts that cost something and the parts nobody talks about.

She currently advises institutions operating under pressure to strengthen integrity and leadership practice. Her recent work includes leading the development of GBV/SEAH standard operating procedures for an energy company in Southeast Asia supported by the Asian Development Bank, collaborating with UNODC on workshops examining gendered dynamics in trafficking in persons and migrant smuggling, and contributing to UNDP's Global Programme for Strengthening the Rule of Law, Justice, Security and Human Rights.
